Capitals Academy Squirt Red took the recent holiday weekend to travel to Sarnia, Ontario, to compete in the International Silver Stick Squirt/Atom A Finals against 15 of the best teams at their age level in the United States and Canada.

The boys played hard, but in the first day of competition fell to the Innisfil (Ontario) Winterhawks and eventual tournament champion Omaha (Nebraska) Jr. Lancers in a pair of 6-0 games. Despite the score line, goaltender Carson Peddie starred, making nearly 60 saves in the two games combined.

In the final day of play, Caps Academy fell behind the Kent (Ohio) Cyclones AA team 3-0 early. However, a late first period tally by Bryce Bjornson, assisted by Will Veneri sparked hopes of a comeback. Caps Academy struck again in the second with a goal off the stick of Will Schryver – assisted by Matthew Shay and Patrick McNally – setting up a frantic third period.

Caps Academy controlled play in the third, creating a number of chances but couldn’t find an equalizer and ultimately fell by a 3-2 score.
